County historical society receives $20,000 grant
Funds to preserve local Underground Railroad artifacts
WARREN — The Trumbull County Historical Society will receive one of 12 Ohio History Fund grants.
The $20,000 grant was awarded by the Ohio History Connection and was the largest of the 12 awards. The fund is one of the six “tax check off” funds that taxpayers can choose to donate to when paying their Ohio income tax.
OHC awarded $189,660 in grants for 2025, the second-highest amount in the 13-year history of the program.
The money for the Trumbull County Historical Society will go toward moving 3,500 artifacts about the Underground Railroad, the anti-slavery movement and the 19th century from the Sutliff Museum at the Warren-Trumbull County Public Library to the climate-controlled environment of the Morgan History Center.
TCHS Executive Director Meghan Reed said, “We are honored to receive an Ohio History Fund grant to support the preservation of Warren’s Underground Railroad history. These funds will help curate the Sutliff Museum inside TCHS’s Morgan History Center as part of our ongoing capital expansion and facilitate the relocation of the collection to its new home.
“The Sutliff Collection contains over 900 letters from a family deeply involved in the Underground Railroad,” Reed said. “Over the next two years, we aim to continue transcribing these letters to enhance accessibility for researchers, scholars, and local residents. Warren and Trumbull County played a vital role in this network — a history that deserves greater recognition and understanding in our region.”
According to the news release from Ohio History Connection, the review panel recommended the TCHS project because it would transfer to a highly competent and growing organization a collection of statewide and national importance.
A check presentation is planned Thursday at the library.
Since the program started in 2012, the Ohio History Fund has made a total of 149 grants to history and cultural organizations across the state totaling more than $1.6 million.
