Hola! Fest in Youngstown, Rock for Care in Lordstown

Assorted ramblings from the world of entertainment:

•   My first thought when I saw the schedule for this year’s Hola! Fest at Wean Foundation Park was, “How can the Labra Brothers not be the headliner of Youngstown’s Hispanic festival?”

Then I did some research on who does have top billing on Saturday.

Organizers are bringing in two-time Latin Grammy winner Tony Succar to close out the festival at 7:30 p.m.

The Peruvian-born, Miami-raised percussionist was nominated for this first Latin Grammy in 2018, and he received four the following year, winning for producer of the year of best salsa album for “Mas de Mi.” He was the youngest artist ever to win both categories.

Succar has worked with such artists as Jon Secada, Marc Anthony, Sheila E. and Arturo Sandoval, and he produced “UNITY: The Latin Tribute to Michael Jackson,” an album that topped Billboard’s Tropical Album Music chart and spawned a PBS special.

Last year he released “Mimy & Tony,” an album he made with his mother.

Youngstown’s Labra Brothers will perform at 6 p.m., and other main stage acts are Conjunto Riquena at 3 p.m. and Mambo Caliente at 4:30 p.m.

The festival starts at noon Saturday with a parade that goes from South Avenue to the park. Other attractions include a cultural pageant, SMARTS drum circle, the Ursuline Spanish Club, Azteca Guadalupana and dance lessons.

Food vendors include Mami’s Bakes, Red Rican Food Truck, Avo-rrito, El Vallarta, Dalia’s, Muy Cabroso and Tortámo. I happened to be working a general assignment reporter shift when last year’s festival was held, and let’s just say I ate very well that shift.

The event runs from noon to 9 p.m., and admission is free.

•  Many area musicians will donate their time and talents on Saturday for Rock for Care.

The annual fundraiser provides assistance for those undergoing treatment at Mercy Health’s Cancer Care Center at St. Joseph Warren Hospital. It assists those battling cancer with such things as skin care to help with the effects of radiation treatment, non-medical dietary supplements, over-the-counter medications and gift cards to help with gas, groceries, etc.

Bands scheduled to play are YNG, Soul Rockers, Grey Beard Band, Greasy Boys, Average Joe’s, Guy and the Citizens, Slick 31, November Loop and Rusted Lullaby.

Acoustic acts include Just Matt, Gregor, Garry Mitcham Jr., Paul Monroe, Leif Damstoft, The McCabes, Phil Brady and Workin’ on It/Jonathon Kibbe.

The event runs from 3 to 11 p.m. at Ross Eatery & Pub, 8421 Tod Ave. SW, Lordstown. A donation of $10 is requested. This year’s event also will include basket raffles, a 50/50 raffle and a rain-or-shine bike run ($20, includes food).

•  Nearly a dozen local and regional breweries will take part in the Columbiana Craft BeerFest 2024: Hops for Tots from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Firestone Farms, 101 Town Center, Columbiana.

The lineup features Aeonian Brewing, Biker Brewhouse, Birdfish Brewing Co., Blue Monkey Brewing, BrewLounge Beer Company, Good Lady Brewhouse, Modern Methods Brewing Company, Noble Creature Cask House, Paladin Brewing, Platform (R&L Lipton) and The 1547 Program.

Performing during the event will be Leanne Binder and Leo D’Angelo & the Dead Foxes. Vendors and food trucks also will be on site.

Proceeds from the event will go toward replacing the children’s playground at Harvey S. Firestone Recreational Park.
