SOUTHINGTON REUNION PLANNED: The 135th Chalker, Norton Viets Family reunion will be held Aug. 5 at the American Legion Hall, Warren Burton Road, Southington. The event begins at noon with buffet dinner at 1 p.m. This year's theme is hats. Those attending are asked to bring a covered dish to share. Prizes will be awarded for the prettiest, strangest and ugliest hats for adults and children. The youngest and oldest Chalker, Norton and Viets family members will receive gifts. The family who traveled the most miles to the reunion will receive a gift. There will be crafts, games, cornhole and water balloons. A business meeting will follow to discuss family matters and to elect a new committee to host the reunion in 2013.
This year's committee includes Nancy Vickers, Bonnie King, David Martindale and Crystal Guerrero.
The descendants are of the first pioneer settlers in Southington. The first pioneers were Luke Viets and his wife, Hannah, David Viets, Benjamin, James and Mercy Chalker and Roderick Norton. The first family reunion was Sept. 12, 1878, at the homestead of James and Mercy Chalker hosted by their son Harrison Chalker. Records from the first reunion and each one after are available to read. Those attending are asked to bring records of genealogy to be added and birth, marriages, deaths or divorces to be recorded.

CLASS OF 1950 PLANS PICNIC REUNION: The Niles McKinley High School Class of 1950 is planning a reunion picnic to celebrate classmates' birthdays. The catered picnic will begin at 1 p.m. Aug. 25 at the home of Joe and Maryann Leonard, at 1162 N.E. River Road, Lake Milton.
