MINERAL RIDGE - Various fundraisers have been held recently to help the Fifth Sparrow with its mission of providing a transitional home for women leaving prison and returning to society.

The organization recently held its second annual 5K Freedom Fun Run and one-mile Walk for Freedom at Mineral Ridge High School which was attended by more than 150 participants.

In prior years, the event and other fundraising has generated more than $5,000.

Lyn and Eric Whitmer, co-executive directors of the Fifth Sparrow, said such fundraisers help to raise community awareness and community participation to real-life issues.

Lyn Whitmer said the home helps women leaving prison restore and rebuild purposeful lives as law-abiding citizens.

The center also licensed equine specialists who will facilitate a program using "Care Mares," where each woman will care for her own mare and develop trust. There will be daily horse handling activities such as feeding, watering and grooming.
