Bonar rewrote Badger hoops record book

Versatile Braves star Tribune Chronicle's top female athlete

July 9, 2012
By MIKE McLAIN - Tribune Chronicle (mmclain@tribtoday.com) , Tribune Chronicle | TribToday.com

KINSMAN - It was an easy decision for Badger Braves girls basketball coach Dusty Karr when an injury a few years ago forced him to find a new point guard.

He didn't need an experienced senior or a developing junior. He knew he needed the freshman that was more than eager to step in.

That's how Sarah Bonar got her start with the varsity in the 2008-09 season. She wasn't old enough to drive a car, but she sure knew how to drive to the basket.

Grand Valley’s A.J. Henson, left, and Badger’s Sarah Bonar were named this year’s Tribune Chronicle Athletes of the Year.

"From the first day she showed up as a freshman she was one of the better all-around players we had," Karr said. "From then forward she took over and became a good leader on the team."

Bonar did more than star on the basketball court. She was a four-year letter winner in track and field and qualified for the state cross country meet in her one and only season as a freshman. She decided to add soccer to her resume last year and was able to earn all-Trumbull County honors.

Bonar's wide array of talents, along with a 4.0 grade-point average and class valedictorian honors, were the credentials needed to be selected as "The Tribune Chronicle's" Female Athlete of the Year.

"I feel extremely honored," Bonar said. "I could never have imagined it."

The word "versatility" comes to mind when describing Bonar's athletic skills. There aren't enough hours in a day to satisfy her appetite for sporting activities. Time constraints kept her from playing volleyball and softball, but she undoubtedly would have excelled in those sports.

"She's definitely one of the best athletes I've ever coached," said track and field coach Carrie Albert. "She has tremendous work ethic. She was the one in cross country that I sometimes had to hold back. She would try to do so much, and sometimes that can be a little counter-productive when you're too sore and too tired. She would go home after a race later that day and run some more."

Bonar's versatility can best be described in her decision to add the shot put and discus to her track and field agenda in her senior season. She was already an accomplished mid- and long-distance runner, having qualified for state in the 800 as a freshman and winning the 1600 at the Trumbull County meet as a sophomore.

Bonar admits her discus technique was far from perfect, but she proved to be a quick learner. She eventually set the Northeastern Athletic Conference record with a 97-1 toss.

"I was a track official at a lot of her meets," said Ron Gordon, who coached Bonar in soccer. "She had never thrown a shot or discus before. At her first meet she came over without any form or anything and won both events.

"The discus is something that takes time to get the form and throw it out there. The first time she threw it she was standing in place with no turn. She's a great athlete and a great kid, too."

Bonar set school records in the 800, 800 relay, 1600 relay and 3200 relay. Albert thinks that Bonar could have competed in every event with the exception of the hurdles. Albert was particularly impressed with Bonar's work in the discus.

"It's an unusual combination," Albert said. "Kids that throw are usually more muscular and have larger builds. They might do a sprint here or there, but they're usually not mid-distance or distance runners."

Gordon watched Bonar adapt quickly to soccer as a defensive midfielder. She had soccer experience as a young child, but she hadn't played competitively for quite some time.

"We could have played her anywhere," Gordon said. "The defensive center midfielder has to run the full field but be more focused on defense. She would use her aggressiveness to win the ball. She won most 50/50 balls that came her way. That's what we needed at that position."

There's no question that basketball tops Bonar's list of favorite sports. Her plan is to continue playing when she attends Rio Grande College to study pre-med later this year.

"Basketball is my passion," Bonar said. "It's been that way ever since I was young and my sister (Samantha) played. I enjoy being around it, watching it and playing it."

Bonar finished as the school's career scoring leader with 1,639 points. She surpassed previous girls' leader Jenny Place (1,405) and boys' leader Dale Blaney (1,397).

"I told her at her open house that 'I'm going to miss you,' " Karr said. "She's a once-in-a-decade player and maybe more than that. She's one of those kids that has a great work ethic. They get it. When it all came together, it was a treat to have her for four years."

As the lone senior on a team that started four freshmen, Bonar had to be point guard, team leader and big sister.

"I look at all of them as friends," Bonar said. "They were there for me when I needed support and encouragement. It tried to do the same for them."

Bonar, who stands close to 6-0, averaged 22.7 points, 10.4 rebounds and 4.5 steals a game last season. She was hobbled early in the season by an ankle injury.

Karr appreciated the leadership qualities Bonar displayed in what was clearly a growing season for the youthful Braves.

"She had an injury-plagued season, but throughout that she kept the younger girls focused," Karr said. "She was kind of the glue you tied in. She showed them the way around without overstepping her bounds. She did a lot of leading by example, but when she had to open her mouth she did."

Bonar received first-team All-NAC and Inland District honors last season. She was third team all-state, first-team all-Trumbull County and was voted the Division IV Trumbull County Player of the Year.

Bonar would like to continue being active in sports after her playing days end. Perhaps the medical background she'll have after college will lead her in that direction.

"I'm kind of interested in helping people, and I would love to have a chance of doing that in the medical field," she said. "I know I won't be able to play sports my entire life, but I want to be a part of it, whether it is as a spectator or coaching."

She's definitely versatile enough to do it all.
