GV's Henson shined in three sports

A.J. joins mother, aunt as Tribune Chronicle top athletes

July 9, 2012
By MIKE McLAIN - Tribune Chronicle (mmclain@tribtoday.com) , Tribune Chronicle | TribToday.com

ORWELL - Twenty years ago Kelly Henson was named Female Athlete of the Year by The Tribune Chronicle.

Henson's son A.J. didn't learn about his mom's accomplishment until his grandmother informed him a couple of weeks ago. It was about the same time A.J. learned that he had been selected as The Tribune's Male Athlete of the Year.

A.J., who excelled in football, basketball and baseball at Grand Valley High School, became the third member of the Henson family to win the award. His aunt Kim won the award in 1990, two years before Kelly earned the honor.

Grand Valley’s A.J. Henson, left, and Badger’s Sarah Bonar were named this year’s Tribune Chronicle Athletes of the Year.

With those bloodlines working in A.J.'s favor, it shouldn't be a surprise that he won the award. As a quarterback, point guard and an infielder/pitcher for the Mustangs, A.J. literally did it all.

A testament to his wide range of skills surfaced in baseball, where he hit .451, stole 30 bases and was the closer for a team that advanced as far as the Division III state semifinals. Not bad considering baseball is his third sport.

"I always knew that basketball is his first love, but all I said is if he decided to make baseball his number one priority he could have gone somewhere else to play baseball," said Russ Bell, the Mustangs baseball coach. "There's no telling how good he would have been. He worked at it very hard."

A.J.'s love of basketball will take him to Lake Erie College, where he'll study sports management. While it never mattered what ball he picked up, there was never a question that A.J. preferred the big one that he could dribble.

"Early on I had always been around (basketball)," A.J. said. "My grandpa was a coach and my aunt played in college. It was something I liked to do to get away. It was always there when I needed to play and to do something. It's hard to play football and baseball by being an only child."

You might say that A.J.'s days of practicing as a youth paid off in the long run. He finished his high school career as the Mustangs' scoring leader with 1,681 points. He had 442 career assists, 226 steals and 409 rebounds.

A.J. was a first-team All-Northeast Lakes District Division III selection and a special mention all-state choice. Mustangs coach Lucas Strohm credits A.J.'s work ethic for helping him achieve many of his goals.

"He's an all-around athlete," Strohm said. "I know he's played baseball and football most of his life. He always made no bones about it that basketball was his thing and where his real interest was. He may have spent more time in the gym than even I did. I know there were times when he was there shooting even when I wasn't around."

One of Strohm's fondest memories of A.J. was his performance against Newbury in the 2010-11 season.

"He had an absolute uncanny ability that when it was needed he could take his focus to a completely different level," Strohm said. "Against Newbury we weren't playing well and we talked some things over at the half. We came back and he kind of isolated himself. I could see in his eyes that he was working things through. The third quarter started and he went lights out. He had 16 points in the third quarter and blew the game wide open."

Playing quarterback and point guard put considerable pressure on A.J. to excel in pressure moments. What made him stand out was his willingness to accept the challenge.

"It's kind of a feeling of you deciding what happens," he said. "It's a good feeling to have. There's a lot of pressure on you. If things mess up I'd rather take the fall than any of the other guys. The guys on the team know what happened, but they don't need to catch stuff from anybody. It's alright me taking it all."

The 5-11, 175-pound A.J. was the focal point on offense for the football team, which is coached by his grandfather Tom. He completed 262-of-461 career passes for 3,707 yards and 44 touchdowns. Last season he was 80-of-125 for 1,309 yards and 15 touchdowns. He carried the ball 74 times for 413 yards and four touchdowns.

"He was the team leader, no two ways about it," Tom said. "He was a running back when he came up as a freshman. As we moved on it was easy to see that the best ball player has to be your quarterback. We talked about it and decided to move him to the quarterback position.

"He moved in and things changed for us quickly his sophomore year. He ran the show. He has great vision. He understands routes and reads defenses. He made a lot of things happen for us."

A.J. also played on the defensive side, starting off at inside linebacker. Tom decided that he didn't like playing his quarterback at such a physical position, so he moved A.J. to outside linebacker and then to free safety.

"He has a great nose for the ball," Tom said.

A.J. was one of four football players that were suspended two games for breaking team rules last season.

"It was terrible not only sitting out but seeing the guys play hard," he said. "Not being able to do anything was the worst part of it. The group of guys never lost faith in us when we were out and when we came back."

There seems to be a bit of perfectionism in A.J. Despite all his accomplishments, he feels he could have performed better.

"It was fun," he said. "I think about it all the time and how fast it went. I wish I could go back and re-do it. It went well, but looking back I see so much more I could have done. I feel there were some plays I could have made but didn't make."

A.J., who had a 3.4 grade-point average, made the honor roll and was named to the National Honor Society. One day he hopes to put his academic skills to use as a sports agent.

Before then he has some more athletic goals to accomplish.
