Teens collect jeans for the needy

January 29, 2012
Liberty Community News , Tribune Chronicle | TribToday.com

After last year's collection of more than 200 pairs of jeans, students at W.S. Guy Middle School wanted to do the project again this year.

Jeans of any size that are in good, wearable condition with no holes or rips can be donated at the school. A collection bin is placed in the hallway near the office. Students have been bringing in their jeans since the collection began Jan. 18. With more than 70 pair already donated, the school hopes to surpass last year's amount of 237 pairs of donated jeans by Feb. 12.

Two years ago, the school was approached by Aeropostale at the Southern Park Mall and members of the W.S. Guy Student Council took up the cause. They began asking their classmates to participate in the jean drive, which were donated to victims of the earthquake that devastated Haiti.

Students in grades fifth through eighth at W.S. Guy Middle School are collecting jeans for those in need in the community. Top jean collectors, so far, pictured, from left, are Marissa Gutierrez, 12; Braisia Battle, 12; and Cameron Daniel, 12.

Last year and this year, however, jeans go to local teens who are in need.

Just as before, everyone who brings in a pair of jeans will receive a 25-percent off coupon from Aeropostale for a new pair of jeans.
