HEALTHY SENIORS FREE VITAMIN PROGRAM: Based on the overwhelming success of its Healthy Kids Free Vitamin Program launched this past spring in area schools, the Hometown Pharmacy chain has created a similar program for area seniors. The company's Healthy Seniors Free Vitamin Program will provide unrestricted access to high-quality vitamin supplements to any adult 62 years of age or older at no charge.
Participants can sign up for the program at any Hometown Pharmacy location. Each participant will receive a program punch card allowing them to obtain a one-month supply of multivitamins every month for the period of one year.

UNITY DAY OBSERVED: Someplace Safe Inc., Trumbull County's domestic violence agency, will be celebrating its annual Unity Day observance. Unity Day is an opportunity to remember victims of domestic violence and celebrate the survivors.
Unity Day is part of National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, which is observed throughout October all across the United States. It is traditional across the nation for people to gather on the first Monday in October to hold candle lighting ceremonies to remember women who have experienced domestic violence.
Trumbull County's ceremony will be hosted by Someplace Safe Inc. at the First United Methodist Church, 309 N. Park Ave., Warren, starting at 11:30 a.m. with formal ceremony starting at 12:15 p.m. Please note the time and location change from previous years.
This year's theme will be "What Can I Do?" The guest speaker will be Caroline Andrews, domestic violence advocate for the Warren Municipal Court.
There will also be a candle lighting ceremony to commemorate those who have lost their lives to domestic violence and to celebrate those who have endured and persevered.

BLUE RIBBON RACE RAISES FUNDS: More than 250 runners hit the streets Saturday for the second annual Blue Ribbon Race to raise awareness of prostate cancer in the Valley. Donations raised from the race exceeded $16,000 and will be used to fund a new educational initiative called Man Up Mahoning Valley. The goal is to create increased understanding about the risk of prostate cancer in the Valley and the importance of yearly testing for all men older than 40.
Prostate cancer is currently one of the most prevalent cancers among males in the United States. The disease affects an increasing number of men in the Mahoning Valley and early detection is vital to its treatment.

AUTISM MISDIAGNOSIS CREATES TREATMENT DELAY: Each person diagnosed with an Autism Spectrum Disorder is affected differently. Nationally, 1 in 110 people has an autism diagnosis, regardless of race or ethnicity. Recognizing the signs of autism can be confusing for parents and caregivers, especially in very young children. Research shows that misdiagnosed children are 95 percent more likely to receive a diagnosis of "bad behavior" instead of a diagnosis of autism. Studies also indicate African American and Hispanic children are more likely to receive a misdiagnosis, which can cause critical delays in treatment and care.
This past year, the Rich Center for Autism received a grant from the Centers for Disease Control to address this need. For the past several months, advocates at the Rich Center have been designing and implementing an outreach program aimed at families in the Hispanic and African American communities in the in the Mahoning Valley, including Trumbull and Columbiana Counties. Early intervention programs - from infancy to kindergarten age - produce positive results for children with autism.
Some families may experience barriers to getting an official autism screening for their child, and in most cases, the full screening is not covered by insurance. Signs of autism are many, and children may disply all of them or just a few. Parents should contact their child's doctor if their child:
Avoids eye contact
Prefers to play alone
Does not respond to name
Repeats actions over and over
Repeats words or phrases instead of using normal language
Flaps hands, rocks, walks on toes
To implement this outreach program, a community advisory board was consulted. HUBBARD CLASS RAISES FUNDS FOR PASTA FOR PENNIES: Roosevelt Elementary School in Hubbard was one of the top three winners for raising $7,216.47 for Pasta for Pennies presented by Olive Garden and benefiting the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
More than 100,000 students at 212 elementary, middle and high schools in northern Ohio collectively raised $300,000 to support cancer research. Students in first through 12th grade participated in this year's program by filling collection jars and boxes in their classrooms with spare change over a three-week period during the school year. The top fundraising class at each participating school received a pasta party from their local Olive Garden restaurant.

KENNEDY FAMILY FUND AWARDS $10,000 GRANT: Easter Seals of Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana Counties and the Youngstown Hearing and Speech Center has received a $10,000.00 grant from the Kennedy Family Fund of the Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley. The grant will support the outpatient medical rehabilitation services provided by the organizations.
Easters Seals and the Youngstown Hearing and Speech Center provide comprehensive medical rehabilitation services as well as offering specialized therapeutic programs for infants, children and adults from as early as one day old to elderly individuals. Whenever possible, Easter Seals and the Youngstown Hearing and Speech Center provides services to other nonprofit organizations.
