11:57 a.m.: Encouraging news for GM Lordstown

POSTED: June 1, 2009

Tribune Chronicle

The General Motors Corp. Lordstown Complex is projected to use two shifts to build 60 brand-new Chevrolet Cruzes an hour after production starts next April, with the possibility that three shifts could be used if sales surge, a GM executive said this morning.

Wed love to sell out to capacity on the Cruze and put a third shift on, but its probably not a reasonable expectation based on how may cars and trucks will be sold in total in the United States and our segment share and our performance in that segment, Vice President of North America Manufacturing Tim Lee said on a conference call with reporters after GMs Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

But if market roars back, or if product is hotter than we anticipate it will be, thats a possibility, but its not the mainstream plan at this point.

The encouraging words come on the day the complex starts a six-week shutdown to cut the inventory of its current small cars, the Chevrolet Cobalt and Pontiac G5, during an industry-wide sales slump.

GM Lordstown missed a big one here - the closing. The Cruze investment in 2010 saved them for another day, but it's still a piece of you know what wrapped in a Chevy badge made now in Russia & China already. Lortdstown will be on the next round of closures or will it survive longer term - that my friends is the question of the day.

Are there going to be many refugee camps to pick from, or will there just be one great big one??

pahootaman-My wife and I have had over 20 GM cars or trucks in the past 20 years, ONE recall on a Cadi CTS. Your opinions are overstated as usual.

There's plenty of other fuel effecient cars out there that won't be recall city and about half than the $40,000+ price tag of the Cruz.

If GM wants to learn anything from success, look at the Prius. The first year it came out, it was dog ugly, but the price was relatively modest and it's fuel effecieny was through the roof. It also wasn't recalled 5-7 times it's first year out like pretty much every GM car is.

I would love to see GM and Chrysler come out of this, but they need to put American's to work so that they can buy the cars. GM isn't the only manufacture that is hurting. Honda sells are down 40% and Toyota is down in the upper 30%. Some of the idiots that bash American cars don't even realize that cars are not American any longer. They are mostly just assembled in America. He!! my 2006 Silverado wasn't even assembled in the US. Canada put that truck together. My feelings are the big three did this to themselves. Move to where you don't pay the employee enough to buy your product and take the job from them that can, soon who can afford your product. With the move to cheap labor, the price of the product didn't reduce, the quality didn't increase and the ability to sell decreased. Great marketing stratagey.

have any of you that put the cruz down ever even seen it once? It is a sharp car and not the cobalt at all. That would be a small car. We aren't building those in 2010. GM wouldn't be putting their new future in it if it couldn't compete with all the others in it's market.

Where's OMG and his incessant ramblings about Lordstown's demise?

The Cruze appears to be a Cobalt/Cavalier with a smaller engine, better electronics, and a higher price tag. Only $4 gasoline will help the sales.

Looks like all those that wished for Lordstown to get closed didn't get their wish. With the new USA-GM being under a microscope, expect GM Lordstown to stay open for a long time. Good for them.
