CORTLAND - Warren G. Harding's boys track and field team didn't want this year to be the year the streak ended.

Thursday, it wasn't as the Raiders captured their sixth straight Trumbull County Meet title by holding off host Lakeview, 121-103.

Marvin Logan, who won the 300-meter hurdles, said his team worked too hard to let a county title slip away.

"Honestly, I don't see us losing this meet," he said after winning the 300 hurdles. "With the determination we have and the goals we have set and the point, we have to make it another winning year. It's not going to be close."

But it was close for a while.

Lakeview picked up 24 points from Ben Moody, the boys running event MVP. He won the 110-hurdles, placed second in the 100 and third in the long jump.

Moody broke his own stadium record in the 110 hurdles with a run of 13.97. It remains the fastest time in the state. He was pushed by Harding's Mitchell Seawood, who ran 14.43, throughout the race.

"He's very tough competitor," Moody said. "I could hear him the entire race and he was right next to me the whole time. I could hear him. I didn't know if his leg was hurting or not, but he was grunting trying to get over that last hurdle - trying to push it a little bit more. Competition like that is great."

Along with Moody's points, the 400 relay finished second to Harding. Heath Harris came up with 18 points by winning the 3,200 over teammate Tyler Ames and taking second to Maplewood's Eric Rupe in the 1,600.

Harding senior Joseph Threats said Raiders coach Charles Penny thought the meet was closer than they thought heading into the final race - the 1,600 relay where no Harding team was entered.

"We were all praying. It means a lot to us," said Threats, who finished first in the 400.

Jarrale Butts won the long jump and meet overall MVP Deaver Williamson won the 100 and 200 and anchored the winning 400 and 800 relays.

"I'm trying to push my team to get win a sixth straight Trumbull County Championship. It feels good to win," Williamson said after the 200 where he grabbed his one leg. "My leg cramped up a bit. I'm glad it happen near the end."

  • ?THROWING IT ALL: LaBrae's Steve Woodyard and Mineral Ridge's Jason Welliver split the honors for field events MVP. Woodyard and Welliver placed high in the shot put and discus.
  • ?RECORD SETTER: John F. Kennedy's Mike Perisa beat out Howland's Dave Nelson for the 800 title. Perisa ran 1:55.33 - a new meet and stadium record.
