Old quilts hold stories
It’s well known that “Follow the Drinking Gourd” was a song whose words turned the eyes of slaves to the starry night sky and helped lead them to freedom. But perhaps what’s not as well-known were the directions sewn into fabric. Nancy Gurdak of Cortland talked recently at the Viets Museum about the messages hidden in the pieced and colorful topography of quilts. Gurdak is a quilter herself. She first showed a group of about 50, the largest attendance yet for the museum’s morning programs, some of her own work — a quilted playmat, a tree skirt, wall-hangings and pillows. “It’s not just the quilt on the bed anymore,” she said. And it wasn’t for slaves passing through the Underground Railroad to safety either, Gurdak explained. Gurdak used the book “Hidden in Plain View: A Secret Story of Quilts and the Underground Railroad” by Jacqueline Tobin and Raymond Dobard as a basis for her talk.
