Holiday, deer seasons are here

November 17, 2009

As winter approaches, Ohio drivers need to be aware of one major hazard when driving: deer. November (actually, beginning in mid-October) begins the mating season, and the deer are on the move. Deer-vehicle accidents can happen any time of year, but now is a good time to remind everyone to be more cautious when driving around Ohio, especially in the early evening or pre-dawn hours. No one wants to hit a deer and have to deal with the resulting insurance claim to repair the vehicle. Much worse, there were six fatalities on Ohio’s roadways in 2008, according to the Web site of the Ohio Department of Public Safety. Also, 1,127 injuries were reported from the 24,590 deer crashes last year. Unreported crashes could push that number to 60,000, according to ODOT. The discussion begins anew with the beginning of fall each year: what to do about the growing deer population in Ohio? There were 467 deer-related crashes last year in Trumbull County alon.
