Trade winds

October 19, 2009 - Mike McLain
The NFL trade deadline is vastly overrated when compared to the NBA, NHL and Major League Baseball.

Major trades rarely take place in the final hours of the deadline, which is Tuesday afternoon. In fact, big trades are a rarity at any time of the year, with the exception of trades for draft picks.

This year could be a bit different. There have been two major trades of late, most notably the deal in which the Browns sent receiver Braylon Edwards to the New York Jets. Tampa Bay recently traded defensive end Gaines Adams to the Chicago Bears.

The Browns seem to be a popular team when talking trade. Brady Quinn's name comes up constantly. Joshua Cribbs has garnered a lot of interest from teams hoping to land the best returner in the NFL.

Surprisingly, defensive lineman Corey Williams has been mentioned as the most likely Brown to be traded. Williams was a big-ticket signing in the 2008 free-agency period, but he battled through an injury-plagued season last year.

Williams' bad shoulder is better this season, and it's shown with his play. Williams isn't a good fit for the Browns' 3-4 defensive system, which is why teams that use a base 4-3 would like to add him to the rotational mix.

The Browns gave up a 2008 second-round draft choice to land Williams. It's doubtful they could get that at this time, which makes the idea of trading him seem strange.

Then again, Eric Mangini is like all head coaches -- he loves draft picks. When a coach is building a team from scratch, draft choices are as valuable as gold.

As for Quinn, it was was reported by "SI's" Peter King that Quinn won't be with the Browns in 2010. My first thought was: "no kidding!"

The question is will the Browns pull the trigger now and not give Quinn another shot? If the plan is to stick with Derek Anderson for the rest of the season, why not part ways with Quinn at this time?

No one wants that to happen more than Quinn, who's been relegated to being a bored sideline observer.
